AIS Stretching

Picture
AIS stands for Active Isolated Stretching - a targeted, therapist facilitated stretch technique that has the client actively involved and engaged in the process.  The process involves having the client stretch themselves into a position specific to lengthen the muscle targetted, then having the therapist add overstretch for a couple of seconds.  Ensuring that the overstretch is limited in time prevents the protective stretch reflex from kicking in (which stops the opposing muscle from contracting with a reciprocal inhibition response) allowing the isolated muscle to relax more efficiently, promoting return to full range of movement and flexibility.

AIS is commonly used by athletes and sports people, but is definitely beneficial for ANYONE who experiencing limited range of movement due to muscle tension.  The great thing is that, as an active therapy, efficient movement patterns can also be reinforced and strengthened.   AIS works to with YOUR existing range of motion - whether that be very limited, or very flexible.

AIS can assist with:
  • Increasing range of motion
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Lower back problems
  • Stretching for runners and walkers
  • Sprained ankle, foot or arch problems
  • Stretching for calves and hamstrings

Further to this, you can be taught some AIS techniques to do by yourself, or with the help of simple and easily accessible equipment.
